Interior design for the TOKYO STATION CITY GRANROOF FRONT store of the Asian cafe franchise, “Gong cha”, which was founded in Taiwan in 2006 and has opened more than 1,400 stores worldwide*. To support the needs of the Tokyo Station location, the store should appeal to a variety of customers. * As of November 2020

Utilizing the level difference of the existing structure, the store uses the front area and the rear area for supporting the customers’ needs. The front of the lower area with a mortar flooring has a large table and high counter stools, creating a relaxing atmosphere for customers to casually stop by. Walking up the linoleum slope painted with the brand’s color, red, you will find the relaxing rear area with a shop counter, benches, and table settings.

The brand message “we would like to offer customers high-quality tea which Chinese Emperors have loved in a contemporary style” is expressed with a tea leaf motif. We combined different shades of colored ash-wood to make the canopy, the tables, and the spandrel walls, which inspired by tea leaves, and the entire space expresses the world of Gong cha.

Gong cha is evolving itself daily to be a worldwide Asian cafe franchise. We aimed to design a store that communicates the brand story, starting with the tea leaf as the brand image, reaching out to a broad base of clients.
