We built an event space intended to promote media arts which opened during the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival. We envisioned a space bringing three functions together: a library presenting prized mangas from the festival’s Manga Division along with related works, a panel exhibition introducing initiatives directed at promoting media arts and an event space featuring talks with creators and researchers from every field.

The venue is made of volumes resembling big building blocks that can be used as bookshelves, panels or benches, etc., to match these three different functions. We gave shapes the versatility to be able to combine the panel and bench volumes and use bookshelves as benches during events. Moreover, we gave color to the space by posing needle punched carpets on the seating surface of benches and the sides of bookshelves.

We strived to make the entire space catchy to the visitors’ eyes looking through the glass at the impressive three-dimensional stacked volumes.
