東京 神保町の建築専門書店、南洋堂の屋外に設置する本棚の計画。
専門書店でありながら、一般の人でも気軽に本を手にとってもらえることと、営業時間内だけ使われることから、着脱の容易さも考慮した棚が求められた。
そこで、既存の建物と共存するように、すでにある外壁の溝に注目し、板を差し込むだけの外に張り出す棚を提案した。本の表紙を前面にしてディスプレイできるように棚の奥行きを決め、細く丈夫な水糸を棚にかけることで、風でページがめくれることを防いでいる。街に張り出した小さな棚は、本がまるで街に浮いているような感覚を与える。書店全体が街に溶け込んで、行き交う人にとって身近な存在となる。

This is a project to build a shelf on the exterior of Nanyodo, bookstore specializing in books on architecture in Jimbocho, Tokyo.
Specialist bookstore as they are, the project required a shelf which can not only let ordinary passers-by feel free to pick up a book from but also can be set up and removed easily since it is supposed to be used only during business hours.
Therefore we took note of grooves on the existing exterior wall and proposed a shelf that is only made up of a board that is inserted into the groove and hangs over from the wall. We determined the depth of the shelf in order that it can display the front covers of books. Slender and stout mizuito (a thread to measure a horizontal level or a base line of construction sites) on the front prevents the pages from being turned by the wind.
The shelf hanging over the street gives out the impression that the displayed books are floating on the street. Thus the whole bookstore blends in the street and becomes close to all those who come and go.
