街歩きや家具の制作、アートイベントなどを通して、港区のパブリックスペースの新しい可能性を発見するプロジェクト「OPEN! FURNITURE」。前年に続き、一般参加を募り、SHIBAURA HOUSEや石巻工房と協働しながら、街と人との新しいつながりを創造する。
今回のプロジェクトでは、事前に設置・協力先を募集並びにリサーチし、神社、八百屋・酒屋などの個人商店、地元のレストランやカフェ、バスの停留所など、芝浦エリアと三田エリアを中心とした12か所を選定。フィールドワークでは、それぞれの場所に見合ったベンチの形状やサイズ、台数を見立て、ワークショップでは、参加者と一緒にベンチを組み立て、選定したスポットを訪問しながら設置していった。地域コミュニティについて各事例を紹介し、今回のプロジェクトのレビューを行ったサミットは、DIYを通じた市民のまちづくりへ参画を検証する場となった。
人々が集まり、交流を生みだす新しいプラットフォームとなる、ベンチという小さな公共物をつくり出すことで、利用者・プロジェクト参加者の両者にとって新たな街への気づきと視点が得られるプロジェクトを目指した。

“OPEN! FURNITURE” is the project which opens up new possibilities through walking around the city, furniture making and art events. Following last year’s event, the event calls for public participation in making a new connection between the city and people, under cooperation with SHIBAURA HOUSE and Ishinomaki Laboratory.
After pre-research to decide installation sites and cooperators, twelve sites were chosen for this project in the target area, Shibaura and Mita Area. These sites included a shrine, private shops as a grocery store and a liquor shop, a local restaurant and cafe, and a bus stop. In the fieldwork, we estimated the appropriate shape and size of the benches for each site while counting the number of benches needed for this project. In the workshop, we assembled the benches and visited the selected location to install them with the general participants. In the summit held another day, where case studies of local community’s functions were introduced, we reviewed this project and verified the public participation in city and community development through DIY.
The Benches, as small public items, can be new platforms where people gather and communicate. We aimed to do the project so that both the users and the project participants gain a further aspect of the city.
