2020年のオリンピックに向けて盛り上がる大都市から離れた、静かな町の路地裏を会場に開催される〈山カップ〉。「みちのおくの芸術祭 山形ビエンナーレ2014」で提案した、スポーツを切り口にしたコミュニケーションアート「WORLD CUP」の精神を引き継ぎ、今イベントでは“新しいローカル競技をデザインする”をテーマに、クスっと笑ってしまう“山形ならでは”の新スポーツ「ハットサル」「花笠テニス」「山形ピンポン」を考案した。 頭の上にのせた〈山〉の帽子を落とさないようにボールをつなぐバランスサッカー「ハットサル」は、そろそろと“能”のようにプレイすることで路地裏に前衛舞台芸術のような場が広がる。オリジナルの花笠ラケットで盛り上がる「花笠テニス」では、「ヤッショー！」「マカショッ！」の掛け声が響き渡り、プレイ中は花笠おどりをしているよう。卓球天板を山の形に変形させて、「山越え」の回数を競う「山形ピンポン」では、チームで協力してボールを転がす。大人も子どもも一緒にプレイできる3種目は、「WORLD CUP」同様に今回も一般参加者を募り、ワークショップ形式で競技やルール、大会の進行などを決めていった。スポーツ×デザインで日常の風景を少しだけ変えてみる、新たな街づくりのための社会実験としての顔も持つイベントである。既存のスポーツのルールを改変したオリジナルスポーツを通じて、新たなコミュニケーションの形を探る機会となった。

YAMA CUP is an event held on the back streets in a quiet and relaxing town far away from the cosmopolitan city which is gearing up for the Olympics in 2020. Taking over the sport-inspired communication art “WORLD CUP” which we proposed in “Yamagata Biennale 2014”, we invented the Yamagata-specific unique sports such as “Hatsal”, “Hanagasa Tennis” and “Yamagata Ping Pong” under the theme “designing new local-specific games” for this event. In “Hatsal”, a type of balance soccer designed to pass balls to each other without dropping the “Yama” hat worn on the head, the play style reminds us of “Noh”, expanding space like avant-garde performing arts on the back streets. In “Hanagasa Tennis” which people play with original Hanagasa rackets, people call out “Yassho!”, “Makasho!” to each other, the play scene is reminiscent of Hanagasa Odori (which is a traditional dance in Yamagata Prefecture). In "Yamagata Ping Pong," the players play ping pong on the folded top board of the table tennis table to compete a number of times for "Yama-Goe" (crossing the mountain). For these three games, which adults and children can play together, we looked for public participants and made the game itself, the rules and decided how to progress the event with them. This event also has a function as a social experiment to change aspects toward ordinary scenes for new community building through sports and design collaboration. The event provided an opportunity to seek a new form of communication through designing the original sports by modifying the rules of existing sports.
